LIVING LABORATORY ARTS (LAB-ART)

Art Meets Science: Living LabArt Experiences for Teens

Our sessions give teens a hands-on introduction to scientific observation while exploring the science of biology: Primary fields observed for LabArt: botany, zoology, ecology…
Perfect as a standalone experience or paired with Living Laboratory Field-Studies, these workshops are aligned with the V9 Curriculum and reporting support.

What Teens Do:

  • Engage in 5โ€“40 investigations per field, botany, zoology, ecosystems…
  • Learn to use the “one pencil” in field method
  • Learn to use three versatile art mediums, understanding how and why each medium is used and how they capture different details.
  • Apply scientific labelling techniques, a real-world approach to accurately record and present discoveries and observations.
  • Transform observations into mini-canvas and field-study observational drawing, building a tangible, exhibit-worthy collection.

Process

  • Workshop times: Allow 2 hours per session (often worked in with field study times)
  • Costs: include material supplies
  • Some pieces may be held by the instructor until finished (this relates to curing etc times)

Why It Works:

  • Reinforces science skills, including observation, analysis, and documentation.
  • Supports curriculum-linked learning and reporting for HEU.
  • Encourages creativity and critical thinking, blending art with scientific inquiry.
  • Flexible: works standalone or alongside Living Laboratory Field-Study Sessions.
  • Reporting support for V9

Didn’t think I would do it as well as the kids, but it was really informative and super helpful. Made me pay attention to things I’ve never noticed before. The kids loved it too LOL. We’re dong the whole year, it is well worth it.
